Understanding your rights and the rules as a tenant in Denmark can be challenging—especially for foreigners.

Help is now available in the form of a new official standard tenancy agreement in English. LLO is also offering a free webinar in English in june.

On 1 February 2025, a new executive order came into force, introducing an authorised English version of the standard tenancy agreement.

This is the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing and various stakeholders, including EjendomDanmark and LLO.

The aim of the English-language tenancy agreement is to provide greater security for tenants who do not speak Danish—such as international students, migrant workers, and expats.

With the English version in hand, tenants can better understand their rights and the legal obligations outlined in rental agreements and contracts presented by landlords.

We can help you
Many rules in the Danish Rent Act are mandatory and apply regardless of what is written in the contract. Always have LLO review your contract—even if you have already signed it.

The party drafting the tenancy agreement decides which language it will be in. If the agreement is written in English, all terms—including those in Section 11—must be in English.

The authorised English version of the tenancy agreement can be used for all new rental agreements entered into from 1 February 2025 onwards.
